Abstract

This study investigates the potential of freelancing to address the high unemployment rate among graduates of the National University (NU) in Bangladesh. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating key informant interviews, case studies, focus group discussions, SWOT and PESTLE analyses, and a review of secondary literature. Data were analyzed using SPSS-22 and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that 72% of respondents believed freelancing could help alleviate unemployment in Bangladesh, while approximately 69% of NU graduates viewed freelancing as a means of self-employment.

Freelancing offers several potential benefits, including economic growth, independent work opportunities, skill development, and social recognition. However, freelancers face challenges such as limited local networking opportunities, irregular income, societal perceptions, technological requirements, contract disputes, and the effects of prolonged screen time. The study also identifies constraints within NU’s infrastructure, expertise, curriculum, and funding, while highlighting the potential role of university authorities and college principals in addressing these barriers.

The study recommends collaboration among policymakers, buyers, freelancers, and educational institutions to improve access to technology, strengthen practical training, enhance English-language and communication skills, improve contractual protection, and create a supportive freelancing environment. It concludes that freelancing can provide a promising pathway to self-employment and economic empowerment for NU graduates in Bangladesh, provided that the existing challenges are addressed through appropriate policy interventions and institutional support.
